ABSTRACT

The PC-I scheme “Value Addition/Research and Development work on Ores and Minerals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa”.

The Mineral Testing Laboratory, Exploration Promotion Division, Directorate General Mines & Minerals, Minerals Development Department 164-C Industrial Estate Hayatabad, Peshawar is the only functioning Government Laboratory facilitating the Mineral Sector of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in particular and of the country in general. The Mineral Testing Laboratory since 1988 from the date of its

inception is well equipped with most modern sophisticated equipment and highly qualified and trained professionals

The Mineral Testing Laboratory has the expertise and experience in Research and Development (R&D) Studies on Pilot Plant scale for up-gradation/enrichment of low grade ores and provides facilities to the mineral sector of the province in terms of enrichment of ores. The low grade mineral resources of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may not be utilized directly for commercial purposes at industrial level,

therefore it is necessary to upgrade the low grade mineral resources of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to the level required for commercial purposes.

The Mineral Testing Laboratory has completed R&D Studies and set the parameters for up-gradation of low grade Copper and Iron ores under the PC-I scheme “Value Addition/Research and Development work on Ores and Minerals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” approved during the year 2011-2012 with initial allocated Budget of Rs. 39.843 million.

The low grade Copper ore samples were processed on Pilot Plant scale and upgraded successfully. The results are: Shishi Valley, Chitral from 2.3% to 23%, Ushery Dara, Dir Upper from 6.7% to 30%, Gerren Gol, Chitral from 2.6% to 24.4%. Similarly the low grade Iron ore samples were upgraded and results are: Karak from 28.6% to 57%, Pezu, Lakki Marwat from 22.4% to 58%, Paniala, D.I.

Khan from 40% to 52% and Nizam Pur, Nowshera from 28% to 60%. The running capacity of the locally fabricated installed Pilot Plants at Mineral Testing Laboratory One (01) Ton. The R&D facility for up-gradation of low grade Iron and Copper ores through this one ton capacity Pilot Plants at MTL premises are available for interested parties for the same study.

The said Research and Development study is the most essential requirement of proper utilization of indigenous mineral resources of the province for up-gradation/enrichment for the future.
